Abstract

Gojoseon's language has many difficulties in identifying its true nature due to the absolute lack of related literature and historic records. About a hundred years after the fall of Gojoseon, FangYan(方言), a linguistic dictionary necessary for the imperial rule of the Han dynasty, was compiled in the early 1st century AD. This vocabulary dictionary contains 60 vocabulary words from the Gojoseon kingdom region, including those from the Joseon(朝鮮)-Ryeolsu(洌水) region, which is believed to be the main area at the time of Gojoseon kingdom's fall in 108 BC, and those from the North Yeon(北燕) region, which was annexed to the Yeon(燕) Dynasty in the early 3rd century BC. According to the isogloss analysis of linguistic geography, the Chinese mainstream historic linguistic circles classified the North Yeon and Joseon-Ryeulsu regions as the "North Yeon-Joseon speech area" since they were considered one linguistic region that had used a significant proportion of common vocabulary. Regarding the linguistic identity of this "North Yeon-Joseon speech area", there has been a conflict between the arguments of ancient Chinese dialect and the views of local native language that means a kind of ancient Korean language. In this regard, approximately 4,300 vocabulary words in ErYa(爾雅), the most representative and the earliest ancient Chinese vocabulary dictionary prior to FangYan, has been compared against 60 Gojoseon vocabulary words in FangYan. The results revealed that only seven vocabulary words in ErYa are found as the same vocabulary or synonym to those Gojoseon words in FangYan. In contrast, approximately 88% of Gojoseon region vocabulary in FangYan was indicated as not directly related to the ancient Chinese in ErYa. Moreover, only four and six vocabulary words of Gojoseon area ware registered as diarect from Joseon (朝鮮) region in the post-FangYan representative ancient Chinese vocabulary dictionaries, ShuoWenJieZi(說文解字) of 2 century AD and YuPian(玉 篇)" of 6 century AD respectively. ErYa did not contain any same vocabulary words identified to the above four and seven character originated from Joseon and North Yan, the ethnic minority region. Therefore, while it cannot be determined that the linguistic identity of the Gojoseon region's vocabulary were directs of ancient Chinese, it is reasonable to consider it as the local ethnic native language of Gojoseon people.
