Abstract

This study was to examine how the longitudinal patterns of affiliation with delinquent peers would be associated with subsequent delinquent behaviors. Data gathered from eighth graders, followed for a period of 4 years, from the Korean Youth Panel Study was analyzed, and the results indicated that some adolescents remain non-delinquent despite the presence of delinquent friends. High self-perception as a delinquent, positive attitudes toward delinquency, insufficient parental control, and frequent exposure to parental aggressive behaviors all play a unique role in adolescents' selection of delinquent friends. However, those with little exposure to parental aggressive behaviors and with negative attitudes toward violence proved to be resilient to the influence of delinquent friends. The influence of delinquent peers on adolescents' level of subsequent delinquent behavior depends mainly on the proximity in time rather than the duration of exposure to delinquent friends.
