Abstract
This study examines the relationship between types of delinquent peer and types of delinquency across the adolescent developmental stage and how types of delinquent peer are related to the process of offense specialization and versatility. The types of delinquent peer are categorized into status offense type peer, property offense type peer, personal offense type peer, and mixed type offense peer. The types of delinquency also are categorized in the same manner. This study hypothesizes that the previous types of delinquent peer affect the subsequent types of delinquency and the types of delinquent peer affect the changes of the types of delinquency over time. Three-wave data from the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey are used to test these hypotheses. First, the results indicate that types of delinquent peer are associated with types of delinquency. The effects of delinquent peer on delinquency represent offense specification rather than offense generalization. The mixed offense type peer is the most important factor to commit a offense and to decide the offense types. Second, the results shows that types of delinquent peer are a factor to explain the change of types of delinquency over time. Types of delinquent peer are associated with the onset, desistance, duration and transition of types of offense. Types of delinquent peer are a factor to explain the offense specialization and versatility. The mixed offense type peer is most important type to determine the process of offense specialization and versatility
