생존분석을 적용한 고등학생의 최초 아르바이트 경험 시점에 대한 영향요인 검증

이 연구는 고용정보원에서 조사한 청년패널조사(YP2007) 1-4차년도 데이터를 이용하여 고등학생의 아르바이트 참여 여부 및 시기에 대한 실태를 확인하고, 이에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 분석하고자 수행되었다. 콕스비례위험모형을 이용하여 연속시간 생존분석을 실시한 결과, 대다수의 학생들은 고등학교 재학 시기에 아르바이트를 경험하지 않고 있으며, 아르바이트에 참여하는 학생들은 대체로 고1~고2 시점의 여름방학에 집중되고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 가구소득에 따른 차이를 확인한 결과, 가구소득이 하위 25%에 해당하는 고등학생들이 보다 빠르게 아르바이트에 참여하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 고등학생 아르바이트 참여는 지역규모가 클수록 그 시기가 늦어졌으며, 중학교 3학년 때의 성적이 낮은 학생일수록 고등학교 입학 이후 아르바이트를 보다 빨리 경험하였다. 한편 중학교 3학년 성적이 아르바이트 참여에 미치는 영향은 전문계고 학생들보다는 일반계고 학생들에서 두드러지게 나타났다. 아울러 학교생활 만족도는 아르바이트 참여에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 반면 교우관계가 좋을수록 아르바이트에 참여할 가능성이 높아졌다. 이상의 분석 결과를 통해 교육기회나 결과에 있어 열악한 환경에 속한 학생들일수록 아르바이트 참여 가능성이 높았으며, 이는 대다수의 학생들이 학업에 열중하는 한국사회에서 아르바이트 참여 학생들의 학습결손을 심화시킬 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 청소년의 아르바이트 환경을 개선하고, 청소년 아르바이트가 이들의 향후 진로계획에 유의미한 경험이 될 수 있는 방향으로 개선될 필요가 있음을 제언하였다.
Abstract
This study explores 1)high school students’ decisions and their participation in work experience, and 2)the factors that influence their decisions and the time, using the 1st-4th data of Youth Panel(YP2007) survey. The Cox proportional hazard models show that 1)most high school students do not participate in part-time work during their period of attendance at school, and 2)for those who decide to participate in part-time work, the most likely time to work is the summer vacation of their freshman and junior year. Furthermore, the students from the bottom quarter of household incomes were shown to start their work earlier than the others. Coming from large regions residence tends to delay the time of the first work experience, while lower academic achievements at middle school hastened it. However, middle school achievements had greater effects on academic high school students than vocational high school students. While satisfaction with school life had a negative impact on the decision to take up part-time work, peer relationships increased the possibility of working. This implies that students from poorer backgrounds are more likely to participate in part-time work, and this can be critical in reducing time which could otherwise be devoted to academic achievement. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that high school students’ working conditions need to be developed and that the working experience needs to be more be helpful for students’ career planning.
