가정배경과 학교적응을 중심으로 한 고등학생의 아르바이트 시간 결정요인 분석

초록

한국사회에서 적지 않은 청소년들이 장시간 아르바이트를 하고 있다. 하지만 청소년들을 노동시장으로 밀어내고 있는 요인들이 무엇인지에 관한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 한국 청소년 패널 조사(Korea Youth Panel Survey: KYPS)데이터를 사용하여 아르바이트 시간을 결정하는 요인의 구조적 관계를 살펴보았다. 주요 변인으로 가계소득, 부모학력, 가정 내 사회자본, 학교부적응, 교육포부, 학업성취, 주당 아르바이트 시간 등을 설정하고 이 변인들 간의 구조적 관계를 알아보기 위해 구조방정식 모형을 활용하였다. 분석결과, 학생의 교육포부, 학업성취, 가구의 소득, 가정 내 사회자본, 학교 부적응 순으로 이들 요인들이 청소년의 노동시간에 직접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 부모학력은 청소년의 아르바이트 시간에 직접적으로 유의한 영향을 주지는 않았지만 가정 내 사회자본, 교육포부, 학업성취 등의 다양한 매개를 통해 청소년의 아르바이트 시간에 부적인 영향을 주는 것으로 분석되었다. 결국 청소년의 아르바이트 시간은 가정배경 그리고 학교환경과 매우 밀접하게 연관되어있다는 것이 파악되었다.

Abstract

Despite the fact that many South Korean adolescents ‐ approximately one third of them ‐ have part‐time jobs, there has been a lack of research investigating the factors that push adolescents into the labor market. In this study, we employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to investigate the relationships between the determinants of working hours of these youth using data harvested from the Korea Youth Panel Survey (KYPS). The findings indicate that the educational aspirations of students, their levels of academic achievement, household income, social capital within their family, and degrees of school disengagement have a direct impact on the working hours of adolescents. Parental education attainment does not have a direct effect on the working hours of children, however, it does appear to affect them through a variety of other mediators such as social capital, educational aspirations, and levels of academic achievement. These results imply that the working hours of teenagers are deeply associated with family background and degrees of school engagement. The implications of this study are also discussed.
