Abstract
This article reconsiders the nature of partisanship as shaped by the interaction between social and political identities and reconstructs its normative potential and democratic function amid the crisis of affective polarization in contemporary democracies. To this end, the article distinguishes between social partisanship and political partisanship: while the former tends to solidify identity boundaries and intensify polarization, the latter enables citizens’ self-reflection and public cooperation, serving as a vital democratic resource. Political partisanship arises at the intersection of multiple social identities, and democratic institutions should not suppress or evade such conflicts but function as mechanisms of coordination and negotiation. Through these processes, citizens participate as agents of collective self-authorship, collaboratively shaping the shared narrative of democracy.
