청소년기 진로 관련 대화 상대 및 빈도에 따른 전공 선택 요인이 전공 만족도에 미치는 영향 분석

초록

본 연구의 목적은 청소년기에 경험한 진로 관련 대화 상대 및 빈도에 따라 전공을 선택하는 데 고려된 요인들이 대학 진학 후의 전공에 대한 만족에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 함이다. 이를 위해 한국 아동·청소년 패널조사(KCYPS) 자료의 고등학교 1학년~대학교 1학년 학생을 추적 조사한 중1자료 4차~7차년도 데이터를 잠재프로파일 분석과 역 확률 가중치를 적용한 구조방정식 모형을 활용해 분석하였다. 분석결과, 대학생의 전공 만족도를 향상시키기 위해서는 대학 진학 전의 다른 사람과의 자신의 진로와 관련된 많은 대화가 중요하며 이 때 부모의 역할이 중요함을 확인하였다. 또한 청소년들이 전공을 선택할 때 타인의 단순한 권유와 조언이 아닌 자신의 적성과 흥미를 스스로 발견하고 이에 적절한 전공을 선택할 수 있도록 해주는 진로 관련 대화의 노력과 방안 마련이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 그 다음으로 해당 전공의 졸업 후 취업 전망은 청소년들이 전공을 선택할 때 가장 많이 고려하는 요인으로 청소년들이 대학을 진학하기 전부터 자신의 직업, 진로, 졸업 후의 계획까지 함께 고민하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 대학생의 전공 만족도를 효과적으로 높이기 위해서는 그 대상을 단편적으로 대학생에게만 초점을 두는 것이 아닌 초등학생부터 고등학생, 대학생, 더 나아가 졸업 후 취업까지 유기적으로 연계된 장기적 관점으로 전환하는 방안 마련이 필요함을 의미한다. 마지막으로 이와 같은 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 대학 진학 후의 전공 만족을 향상시키기 위한 방안에 대한 시사점을 논의하였다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of selection factors of academic majors on satisfaction with those majors, according to the degree of career conversation experienced in adolescence. To this end, latent profile analysis and structural equation model with inverse probability of treatment weights were adapted to data harvested from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS), from Wave Ⅳ (10th grade) to Wave Ⅶ (13th grade). The findings of the current study were as follows. In order to improve the satisfaction of college students with their chosen majors, engaging in conversations related to their own career interests with others were important before going on to college, and important role of parents in this process was confirmed. In addition, it was found that conversations related to career choice were essential in enabling adolescents to discover their own aptitudes and interests, rather than simply accepting the recommendations and advice of others in choosing their major. Additionally, employment prospects after graduation appeared to be the most important factor in choosing majors. In other words, it was confirmed that adolescents were worried about their careers and post-graduation plans even before entering college. This indicates that in order to increase the levels of satisfaction in choice of majors by college students, a long-term perspective on career choice, from elementary school to post-college graduation, should be in place. Finally, based on the results of the current study, the implications for the improvement of satisfaction levels with choice of majors were also discussed.
