청소년의 직업포부와 희망직업 -대학전공 선택과의 관련성 분석

이 연구는 청소년들이 고등학교 시절 희망하던 직업과 대학진학 시 선택한 전공과목과의 관련성을 규명하기 위해 한국청소년패널조사(KYPS) 자료를 분석하였다. 먼저 직업포부(occupational aspiration) 수준에 어떠한 요인들이 영향을 미치는지 알아본 후, 표본선택모형(sample selection mode1)을 적용하여 희망직업과 전공과목의 일치여부와 관련된 영향요인들을 살펴보았다. 우선 희망직업을 사회경제지수(socio-economic index)로 전환하여 직업포부 수준을 분석한 결과, 남학생의 직업포부 수준이 여학생보다 높았으며 부모의 직업지위와 교육수준도 정(+)적인 영향력이 다른 요인들을 통제한 상태에서 통계적으로 유의미했다. 또한 학업성적이 높거나 일반계 고등학교에 재학 중인 학생인 경우 그렇지 않은 학생보다 직업포부의 수준이 높았다. 이어서 희망직업과 대학 전공간의 관련성을 분석해 본 결과, 남학생이거나 학업성적이 높은 학생, 또는 진로성숙도나 진로포부 수준이 낮은 학생이 상대적으로 희망직업과 무관한 대학 전공을 선택할 가능성이 높은 것으로 추정되었다. 학업성적이 우수한 학생의 경우 가능한 전공 선택의 폭이 넓으므로 자신이 희망하는 직업과 관련된 전공을 선택할 가능성이 높으나 학업성적과 전공불일치 사이에 정(+)의 관계가 나타났다. 이와 같은 경향은 대학진학 과정에서 자신이 희망하는 직업과 관련된 전공보다는 진학할 대학의 평판도가 우선시되기 때문에 나타났을 개연성이 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to establish the determinants of occupational aspiration and mismatch between desired occupation and college major among Korean adolescents. Using the data from the Korean Youth Panel Survey, the study introduces a selection bias model to analyze the two dependant variables: occupational aspiration and college major mismatch. Firstly, the result suggests that socioeconomic background influences on high school students’ occupational aspiration, which is estimated in accordance with International Socioeconomic Index scores of respondents’ desired occupations. Occupational aspiration of male adolescents is higher than that of female adolescents, and the positive effects of parents’ occupation and education on children’s occupational aspiration are statistically significant. Adolescents who achieve higher academic performance are also relatively ambitious for higher occupational status. Occupational aspiration of vocational high school students is lower than that of academic high school students. Secondly, according to the Heckman probit model, male matriculates are more likely to choose a college major which is lessed matched with their desired occupations than female matriculates. Higher occupational aspiration and career maturity encourage matches between desired occupation and college major. Additionally, adolescents who achieve higher academic performance are more likely to choose a college major which is not matched with their desired occupations.
