Abstract
As its name indicates, the byeolsin rite of Hogye-ri, a typical Confucian ritual ceremony, is very different from a popular religious ritual, the dangsan rite, commonly seen in Gwangju and other areas of South Jeolla Province. It has all the aspects of an official ritual including officiants, sacrifices, and processions found in the ceremony of Gukjo-o-rye-ui. Many of the related literatures found in the village not only shed a light to the history of the rite, but also help in the identification of the process of how official rituals became popularized in the late Joseon Dynasty. It was only a couple of decades ago when the dangsan rite was discontinued, however, before then, the byeolsin and dangsan rites were observed together in Hogye-ri. I have found in my fieldwork in every year's first full moon, parts of the dangsan rite were reduced, simplified, or ignored for the sake of expediency. However, the studies of the byeolsin rite in 1992 and 2002, I have found almost no change in its form during the ten year period. There exist a vibrant life force of the byeolsin rite as it is recorded in the record book related to winter activities beginning from the time of King Sukjong. Depending on the direction of the future research, 20 or so historical documents preserved by the village will not only provide historical and cultural interpretations of the village but also can be used for a broader context. Although other documents related to winter activities were found in other villages, the fact that documents with detail records of village rituals like the ones found in Hogye-ri are non-existent goes to show the value of its novelty and the possibility of generalization, in other words, illuminating village rituals in other regions through the study of the byeolsin rite of Hogye-ri.
