Abstract

Hanging Geumjul(금줄) had been a part of the childbirth culture in Korea until the industrial society, but the acting took on a different meaning from the folk’s one in the royal family in Joseon Dynasty. Gwonchorye(권초례), including hanging Geumjul, is the rite related to the childbirth in the royal family. Gwonchorye in royal family is essential with regard to the discussions about the historical change of ‘childbirth folk’(산속) and the class difference, which are also revealed well in the change of the rite. The study is meant to track down the change of Gwonchorye and figure out it’s meaning. Gwonchorye was named as ‘Gaeboksinchorye(개복신초례)’ in earlier Joseon dynasty, but as ‘Gwonchoje(권초제)’ in late Joseon dynasty. This study attempts to reconstruct the rite by reviving the world of experiences of those who took part in the rite. In earlier Joseon dynasty, the essential part of Gwonchorye named as Gaeboksinchorye was not the acting of rolling up the straw rope(새끼줄) that had hung from the top of the door of the delivery room for seven days, but praying for ‘the long life without diseases(무병장수)’ at Sogyeokjeon(소격전) that was the temple of Daoism. Around the late 16th century or the early 17th century, Gwonchorye went through the noticeable change of the structure of the rite. Both the arguments about abolition of the Sogyeokseo(소격서) that presided over the rite in the King JungJong(중종)'s reign and the demolition of the Sogyeokseo through the invasion of Japan(1592) made Gaeboksinchorye disappear from the scene. Around the late Joseon dynasty, the Daoism rite was replaced with Confucian rite. The rite had the form of the Confucianism, namely Confucian worship(제사). In such a way, it could meet the desire of the royal family for ‘the long life without diseases’. Instead of the straw rope in the past, now ‘the straw mat(산자리)’ was taken out of the delivery room and hung it from the top of the special door for seven days. On the seven day, it was rolled up and put into the chest. The chest and other items related with ‘the long life without diseases’ were placed on the table for the worship. Gwonchogwan(권초관) ‘burned incense and bowed twice(분향재배)’. In spite of the change of the form of the rite, it’s meaning, related with ‘the long life without diseases’, continued to come down with the rite.
