Abstract
In Taiwan, 'Qi')dengsheng(henceforth ‘Qi’) has been misunderstood but very unique. Some critics have argued that his novels are ‘The presentation of inconsistent humanity’ and some criticize that the form and style of his novel are weird. But as a matter of fact Qi rather is a sincere follower of modernism. This paper would discuss his novel “I love Black Eyes” (1967) with 2 viewpoints. One is Love, the other is dialectical existence. Qi considers a significance of existence describing a hero Longdi Li. When Taipei had a flood, Longdi Li gave up his family. On the other hand he saved a street girl who is a perfect stranger. It is to present ‘immediate’ duty to an individual life. His choice shows us that each individual is worthy of being. ‘Black Eyes’ means not only a wife, but also a prostitute, besides it denotes human beings who he has encountered in his life. This paper further discuss that Qi’s novels would describe moral itself, not immorality generally known.
