초록

야콘(Smallanthus sonchifolius [Poepp. & Endl.]

Abstract

Yacon (Samallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson), a member of the Andean root crops (including potato and sweet potato) renowned for its sweet taste and crisp texture, has gained popularity owing to its high fructooligosaccharides content. Although gamma-ray mutagenesis has been utilized to develop breeding resources with novel characteristics, research on the radiation sensitivity of yacon remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to determine the optimal gamma-ray dosage for mutation breeding in yacón. Crown and green buds of yacon were exposed to gamma rays (20~80 Gy) and subsequently planted in a field. The median lethal doses for crown and green buds were 22.4 and 36.6 Gy, respectively. The aboveground characteristics of early generation (M1) included reduced plant height and leaf stem weight, resulting in a plant canopy highly adaptable to dense planting. Additionally, cracking of underground parts was notably reduced, thus improving quality characteristics. In the mutant descendant generation (M8), plant height remained similar to that of the original species or showed a decreasing trend; however, stem and leaf numbers along with leaf stem weight increased compared with the original species. The total tuber yield was 4,300 and 4,251 ㎏/10a under 20 and 40 Gy treatments, representing an increase of 12.7% and 11.4%, respectively, compared with the original species (3,817 ㎏/10a). After considering growth and quality factors, gamma-ray doses within the 20~40 Gy range were found optimal for selecting useful mutant lines in yacón. These mutants could contribute in developing a new yacón variety with high fructooligosaccharides content and long-term storage capabilities.
