Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present the direction and specific measures of liberal arts modern poetry lectures that develop university students ability to appreciate literary works and literary imagination. To do this we examine the design process, implementation, and results of H University’s liberal arts elective “The Story of Our Literature,” conducted in the second semester of 2022. The lectures aimed to improve students ability to encompass understanding and expression by gaining experience through literary activities based on an activity-oriented approach to literature. The 'literary activities' included a ‘subjective poetry reading’ activity, which is an understanding activity, and a ‘poetry paraphrasing’ activity, which is an expression activity. The ‘subjective poetry reading’ allows learners to appreciate modern poetry by using intertextuality between literary works and the process of dialogue-centered teaching and learning. The ‘poetry paraphrasing’ activity is based on the context of the original poem, but tasks students with converting the poem into a short story by utilizing their literary imagination and ability to creatively reconstruct. Three significant results can be derived from the outcome of the learner activities and the learners’ written impressions. First, it is possible to develop the ability to appreciate subjective literary works through “subjective poetry reading” activities, and to experience the diversity of interpretations in the process of shared appreciation. Second, literary imagination, creative reconstruction ability, and even creative expression ability can be cultivated through “poetry paraphrasing” activities. Finally, individual learners can experience internal growth through a series of processes. This paper does not proceed to present a specific teaching model, but this would be a desirable further outcome of the present research.
