Abstract
This study compares women’s balyang hairstyle culture in the Joseon and Edo periods, focusing on aesthetic values shaped by social structures. In Joseon, Neo-Confucian ideals emphasized modesty and morality, with hairstyles reflecting social status and ceremonial roles through restrained elegance and ornate accessories. Edo’s urbanization and merchant class growth fostered expressive, trend-driven styles, especially influenced by courtesans. While both societies shared Confucian roots, Joseon’s aesthetics were hierarchical and moralistic, whereas Edo’s were sensuous and popularized. This research offers a foundation for comparative studies on East Asian women’s aesthetics and cultural shifts
