Abstract

Objectives: This study investigates the individual and combined effects of self-efficacy and disability acceptance on life satisfaction among individuals with disabilities, utilizing the Integrated Social Cognitive Theory framework and the Comprehensive Model of Post-traumatic Growth. In this context, self-efficacy refers to the confidence developed through the acceptance of one's disability, acknowledging areas of diminished psychological and physical control. Such self-efficacy is posited as a crucial determinant in enhancing life satisfaction for individuals with disabilities. Method: To achieve this, data from the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled (PSED) spanning six years (2017-2022) was analyzed using a two-way fixed effects model. Results: The results indicate that both self-efficacy and disability acceptance play positive roles in forming life satisfaction. Furthermore, the significance of the combined effect of these psychological variables demonstrates that the belief in one’s abilities alone does not yield as much life satisfaction as when this belief meets the process of self-objectification, where individuals distinguish and accept what they can and cannot do. This leads to higher life satisfaction. Implications: This study makes a significant contribution to the diversification and deepening of the understanding of the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. It does this by expanding the application of theories and understanding the longitudinal relationships of psychological factors within the context of internal dynamics.
