Abstract

Objectives: This longitudinal study investigated the effects of communication and perceptions of individuals with disabilities through SNS (Social Network Service) on depression, a psychological factor of individuals with disabilities. Method: To examine the longitudinal interaction between the persistence and dynamics of depression and SNS-related perceptions of individuals with disabilities, an autoregressive lag model was applied using data from the first to third years of the Korea Disability Development Institute’s Disability Life Panel Survey (2018-20). Results: Depression levels in 2018 had a significant negative effect on SNS-related perceptions in 2019, and SNS-related perceptions in 2019 had a significant negative effect on depression levels in 2020, suggesting the possibility of a dysfunctional interaction where depression affects SNS-related perceptions, which in turn affects depression levels, which in turn affects SNS-related perceptions. Conclusion: By discussing the direction of depression interventions for individuals with disabilities, we aimed to explore early detection and interventions to prevent recurrent depression in individuals with disabilities. We discussed interventions that support individuals with disabilities in actively using their perceived usefulness and self-efficacy to realize their full potential.
