Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the impact of commonly used indicators of “decent jobs” on employment retention, with job satisfaction serving as a mediator for both individuals with developmental disabilities and their caregivers. Method: Using an Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), this study analyzed data from 622 pairs of employed individuals with developmental disabilities and their caregivers, drawn from the 2023 Work and Life Survey of Individuals with Developmental Disabilities. Results: Full-time employment status negatively impacted caregivers’ employment retention, mediated by caregiver’s job satisfaction. Job satisfaction of both individuals with developmental disabilities and their caregivers had a significant interaction effect on employment retention, while the job satisfaction of individuals with developmental disabilities had stronger effect on their own employment retention. Implications: This study is significant in that it challenges the traditional discourse around “decent” jobs, typically centered on individuals without developmental disabilities, may not be applicable to individuals with developmental disabilities, and it examines the perceptions of both individuals with developmental disabilities and their caregivers.
