웨스트민스터 신앙고백서의 종말론

초록

논자는 본고를 통해 장로교회의 주요 표준문서중 하나인 웨스트민스터신앙고백서가 담고 있는 종말론적인 내용들을 논구해 보았다. 연구 결과 신앙고백서는 종말론과 관련하여 대단히 신중하게 선별된 주제들만 다루고 있음을 확인하게 되었다. 크게 보면 신앙고백서는 사람이 죽은 후에 처하는 중간상태와 죽은 자의 부활 문제를 다루는 32장과 최후심판을 다루는 33장으로 양분되어 있다. 웨스트민스터신학자들은 당대의 뜨거운 논쟁의 주제인 천년왕국에 대한 논의를 전혀 포함하지 않고 있는 것을 보았다. 그러나 은연중에 유대인의 민족적 회심과 종말을 연관짓는 후천년설적인 경향을 보이고 있고, 종교개혁자들의 일반적인 해설에 따라 교황을 적그리스도로 해석하는 면을 보이기도 했다. 그러나 신앙고백서는 논쟁이 될 만한 주제들은 최대한 회피하고, 다만 성도들에게 보편적으로 가르쳐야 할 진리들만을 간결하게 선택해서 다루었다. 재림의 시기에 관해서도 우리는 알수 없으며 다만 항상 깨어서 마라나타의 신앙을 가지도록 권하고 있음도 확인해 보았다. 이로 미루어 보아 웨스트민스터신앙고백서에 담긴 종말론은 상세한 안내서가 아니라 안전한 울타리를 제공해주고 있다고 결론지을 수 있었다. 교회 사역자들이 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서나 대소요리문답에 담겨져 있는 간단명료한 그러나 핵심적인 종말론적인 내용들을 잘 전달한다면 종말론적인 이단 사이비 사상들의 미혹에 빠지지 아니하게 할 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다. 그리고 다양한 종말론적인 주제들은 성경과 신앙고백서들에 근거하여 개혁신학자들이 풍성하게 논의하고 전개해 왔기 때문에 그러한 논의들을 참조해야 할 것이라고 생각한다.

Abstract

In this paper, I made an exhaustive discussion on the eschatological contents of the Westminster Confession of Faith, one of the main Standards of the Presbyterian Church. It has been found that the Confession deals only with carefully selected topics on eschatology. Its contents are largely divided into two chapters, i.e. chapter 32 on the intermediate state and the resurrection of the dead and chapter 33 on the final judgments. It has also been found that the Confession does not mention anything about the Millennium, which has been a controversial subject among the theologians at that time. However, it associates the national conversion of Jews and the end-time implicitly. And the Confession stated clearly that the Pope is the Antichrist according to the common explication of the reformers. The theologians, who wrote the Confession, tried their best to avoid the controversial themes as much as possible, and chose to deal with the contents that the Christians are to be taught in general. It has also been noted through it that we cannot know the exact time of the Second Coming of our Lord and we must be spiritually awake and live on with the Maranatha expectation (Lord, come!). Upon the results of our research, we can conclude that the Confession does not provide us with the details of a textbook on the eschatology, but it does provide a secured fence for us. However, I think that if the church ministers teach the key eschatological contents of this Confession, then they can help Christians not to fall into the false eschatological delusions taught by any eschatological heretic/cult. And we need to refer to the results of other researches which many reformed theologians have gradually developed on the basis of the Bible and the Reformed Confessions.
