Abstract
This paper investigates the Old Testament’s view of death, afterlife and resurrection. Death is accepted as inevitable in the Old Testament but its view toward death is negative. A closely related Hebrew word to the concept of afterlife in lAav.. The characteristic state of lAav. is generally described negatively in the Old Testament. Isaiah 26:19 and Daniel 12:2 are the major texts that reflect the resurrection concept in the Old Testament. This paper argue that the idea of “rise” and “awake” in these texts represents the individual bodily resurrection instead of the restoration of the nation Israel. A historical-critical view of Isaiah 26:19 and Daniel 12:2 concerning the authorship issues regards them as the second-century BC materials. Therefore it views the resurrection thoughts in the Old Testament were influenced by the Persian thoughts. However, this paper argues that the attitude toward the resurrection concept in the Old Testament are considerably different from the Persian thoughts, even though one may not completely deny the possibility of the Persian influence on the resurrection idea in intertestamental texts. Thus we contend that the resurrection concept in the Old Testament is based on the ancient Israelite faith inherent in the Old Testament. The resurrection idea of Isaiah 26:19 and Daniel 12:2 provides an answer to the question about what will happen to the future of the righteous people of God who lived, suffered and died before being delivered by God. The circumstance shouldn’t be limited to the situation of the Jewish people in the second century BC. Regarding the authorship issue of Isaiah 26:19 and Daniel 12:2, we advocate the interpretation of the final form of the text. The thoughts of resurrection and afterlife reflected in Isaiah 26:19 and Daniel 12:2 are inherently present in the various Old Testament texts, even though their number may not be great, as ancient Israelite thoughts. The concepts of death, afterlife, and resurrection are less frequently addressed in the Old Testament; therefore this paper proposes that those concepts may also be understood biblical-theologically in connection with these topics in the New Testament.
