본 연구는 죽음, 중간 상태 그리고 부활을 중심으로 한 기독교 종말론을 재평가하고 있다. 전통적 기독교는 인간이 죽는 후 천국이나 지옥으로 곧바로 간다고 믿어왔지만, 이것은 성서에 기초한 사상이 아니다. 이것은 사람이 죽을 때, 그의 몸은 죽어도 그의 영혼은 생존한다고 가르치는 헬라의 영혼불멸사상에 기초한 것이다. 하지만 성경에 따르면 영혼은 사망 후 생존할 수 있는 일종의 본질적 실체라기보다는 인간의 비물질적 국면이다. 인간의 육체와 영혼은 분리될 수있는 실체들이 아니라 함께할 때만 기능할 수 있는 통일체이다. 한개인의 죽음은 그의 일부에만 임하는 것이 아니라 그 사람 전체에임하는 경험이다. 전인적 인간의 죽음에 대한 지식의 결여는 중간상태에 대한 온갖 종류의 오해를 양산한다. 사망 이후에도 영혼이생존한다는 믿음은 가톨릭의 연옥설, 웨슬리의 독특한 황천설(hades) 그리고 죽음 후 영혼이 천국으로 곧바로 갔다가 최후 부활의때에 몸과 재결합하기 위해 돌아온다는 교리 등을 양산한다. 본 연구자는 영혼이 사망 후에도 생존할 수 있는 실체가 아닌 인간의 한 국면이라는 신념을 기초로 하여 세 가지 사실을 언급하며 결론짓고자 한다. 첫째, 인간의 육체와 영혼은 분리 가능한 실체들이아니라 둘이 함께 할 때 기능할 수 있는 통일체이다. 둘째, 죽음은 한 사람의 일부대신 그 사람 전체에 임하는 운명이다. 셋째, 궁극적 소망이자 하나님의 재창조인 부활은 참된 죽음을 직면한 자들에게 약속되었다.
Abstract
This study reevaluates Christian eschatology, particularly focusing on the issues of death, the intermediate state, and resurrection. Traditional Christianity has believed that when man dies he immediately goes either to heaven or hell, but this is not a biblically based idea. Rather, it is based upon the Greek concept of the immortality of the soul which teaches that when a person dies, while the body indeed dies, the soul does not die but survives. However, according to the Bible the soul is not a kind of essential entity that can survive after death but an immaterial dimension of the human being. The human body and soul are not separable entities but a whole that can function only when incorporated. A person’s death is not an experience that reaches only to a part but to the whole person. The lack of knowledge of death as the death of the whole person produces numerous misunderstandings about the intermediate state. The belief in the soul’s survival after death produces doctrines such as a concept of purgatory in Catholicism, Wesley’s unique concept of hades, and the doctrine of the soul going to heaven after death and coming back at the time of the final resurrection to be reunited with the body. I conclude the paper with three implications of the belief that the soul is not an entity that can survive after death, but one dimension of the whole person. First, the human body and soul are not separable entities but a whole that can function only when the two exist together. Second, death is an outcome that affects the whole person rather than only a part. Third, resurrection is the ultimate hope and God’s re-creation is promised to those facing true death.
