Abstract
The goal of this study is to analyze the different canonical functions of two similar Psalms (Pss 14 and 53). There are same or similar psalms (or verses) in the whole Psalter (Pss 15:1-5 and 24:3-6; Pss 40:13-17 and 70:1-5; Pss 108:1-5 and 57:7-11; Pss 108:6-13 and 60:5-12; Pss 14 and 53, etc.) and this study intends to answer why Psalm 14 is placed in Book I and Psalm 53 in Book 2. In this article I will argue that the duplicate psalms are very similar, however they convey different and unique messages according to their canonical contexts. To do this, I will first analyze small and big differences in the two psalms, which will demonstrate and clarify how they are different in spite of their similarities. In the second and third steps, I will explore what kind of functions the two psalms perform in their own canonical contexts and what kind of messages they convey. While completing each of these steps, I will utilize canonical criticism as a main hermeneutic tool.
