본 논문은 사무엘 러더포드 사상을 중심으로 구속의 언약 교리가 성경에 뿌리를 둔 것인지를 탐구한다. “구속의 언약”은 창세 전 삼위일체 하나님 안에서 성부와 성자 사이에서 맺어진 구속적인 언약을 일컫는 신학적인 용어이다. 이 교리가 성경에 기초한 것이 아니라고 주장하는 사람들이 있다. 대표적인 사람들로 바르트, 스킬더, 로벗슨의 주장을 소개하고 온건한 입장을 취하는 네델란드 학자들의 견해도 소개한다. 논지전개 방식은 먼저 구속의 언약에 대해 다수의 부정적인 입장들과 온건한 입장들을 간략하게 소개한 후 부정적인 입장과는 달리 이 교리가 성경의 토대 위에 세워진 것임을 논증하되 러더포드 문헌에서 발견되는 12가지의 논거들을 요약하여 제시하는 방식을 취하였다. 러더포드라는 인물을 선택한 이유는 그가 구속의 언약을 신학적 전통이나 신학자들 사이의 합의에 호소하지 않고 구속의 언약을 지지하는 성경 텍스트를 선별하여 소개하고 그것에 기초하여 주석적인 논증을 시도했기 때문이다. 성경에 기초하여 하나님과 사람 사이에 맺어진 언약과는 다른 성부와 성자 사이에 맺어진 언약의 존재는 우리의 구원을 원하시는 하나님의 무한한 사랑과 온전한 성취를 강하게 교훈한다. 이 논문의 기여도는 성경이 어떻게 구속의 언약을 지지하고 있는지를 12가지의 각도로 조명함에 있다.
Abstract
This paper deals with whether the covenant of redemption is rooted in Scripture, by examining the thought of Samuel Rutherford. This word “Covenant of Redemption”(pactum salutis) is a theological term that signifies the covenant between God the Father and God the Son. There are some scholars, such as Barth, Schilder, and Robertson, who argue that this doctrine does have the support of biblical evidences. There are other scholars like Dutch theologians (Bavinck, Kuyper, and Berkouwer) who have a mild view on the covenant of redemption. The procedure of discussing this topic is, first, to introduce the negative and the mild views on the pactum salutis, and then to suggest twelve arguments that, unlike the former, prove there to be this covenant in Scripture, arguments that are keenly made by Samuel Rutherford on the scriptural ground. The reason for choosing Rutherford as an advocate of the pactum salutis is that he does not appeal to a theological tradition and the doctrinal consensus of his contemporaries but to the concrete texts in the Bible firmly supporting the doctrine. The existence of the pactum salutis in the Bible teaches the eternal love of God and its firm accomplishment. The contribution of this paper is, probably, to illuminate how the Bible supports the doctrine of the pactum salutis by presenting the twelve biblical arguments.
