이 소논문은 토마스 보스톤의 언약신학을 분석한다. 언약신학을 율법주의와 동일시하는 제임스 토란스는 보스톤이 언약신학과 은혜의 신학 사이에 무리한 조합을 시도하다가 신학적인 일관성을 견지하는데 실패했다고 주장한다. 이에 대해 필자는 보스톤에게 있어 언약신학과 율법주의는 무관하며, 따라서 그의 언약신학과 하나님의 주권적 은혜 사이에는 그 어떠한 모순 관계도 성립하지 않는다고 주장한다. 이것을 확인하기 위해 이 논문은 시내산 언약에 관한 보스톤의 견해를 집중적으로 분석한다. 시내산 언약이야말로 율법과 복음, 행위의 원리와 은혜의 원리, 그리고 하나님의 주권적 은혜와 인간의 의무 등에 관한 그의 견해가 가장 잘 드러나 있기 때문이다. 한편 보스톤이 강조하고 있는--은혜의 신학으로서의--언약신학이 독특한 것이 아니라 오히려 개혁주의 언약신학의 커다란 흐름을 대변한다는 사실을 입증하기 위해 본고는 그의 견해를--제네바의 개혁주의 전통을 대변하는--프랜시스 튜레틴의 언약신학과 비교한다. 이를 통해 복음과 율법 사이에 존재하는 "달콤한 조화"를 공통으로 강조하는 두 사람의 신학적 견해가 17세기 개혁파 언약신학 자체의 고유한 특징임을 확인할 것이다.
Abstract
The federal theology of Thomas Boston has perplexed many theologians. James Torrance argues that Boston is not a consistent Calvinist federal theologian. Scholars such as Torrance, Donald Bruggink and Charles Bell believe that the root of perfidious legalism was inherent in the covenant theology itself. Thus, Boston’s dual emphasis on God’s free grace and covenant can be seen as problematic. To solve this problem, Torrance concludes that the problem of Boston was that he himself was a federalist and that he failed to recognize that the legalism against which he was protesting grew “out of federalism itself.” This essay, defining Boston’s federal theology as a theology of grace, attempts to demonstrate that Boston was a consistent Calvinist federal theologian. Given the need to prove the consistency of Boston’s federalism, this paper compares the covenant theology of Boston with that of Francis Turretin—the great seventeenth century Calvinist theologian of Geneva. Especially, it focuses on how they deal with the problem of the tension or inter-relationship between the two aspects—promise and human duties—of the covenant. In order to better understand this issue, this paper explores their views of the Mosaic Covenant, by which their typical way of dealing with tension between the law and the gospel—within the framework of their covenant concept—may be best exemplified. In the course of discussion, this essay will demonstrate that there exist a substantial continuity between the two theologians.
