Abstract

“The Geneva Confession of Faith”(1537) was the articulated theological statement written in a specific historical situation of the sixteenth-century Geneva. The purpose of this confession was to explain reformation vision in order to institutionally realize it in Geneva. This study aims to illuminate the reformative and the realistic features of the ecclesiological statements in this Confession which represented the characteristics of the sixteenth-century french-speaking Swiss reformation. The first part of the study reviews the historical issues concerning the reformation of the Pays de Vaud including Geneva in the 1530s. This review also deals with the bibliographical issues of “the Geneva Confession of Faith.” Next part analyzes the contents of the ecclesiological statements in the Confession, particularly the definition of the true Church in chapter 18 and the statement about excommunication in chapter 19. This analysis shows that the Geneva Confession tried to state the fundamental ideas of the Church according to the strong reformation motive and the realistic interest in establishing reformation in the visible church. In conclusion, this study manifests that “the Geneva Confession” foretold the consistent ecclesiological foci of reformed tradition: the principle of Christ’s sole lordship, the necessity of the right administration of church discipline, and the suggestion of the pastoral measures from the eschatological perspective.
