본고는 교회의 본질적인 속성을 정확하게 고백한 「사도신경」의 “거룩한 공회를 믿사오며”라는 고백의 진정한 의미와 역사적 중요성을 살펴보려고 한다. 우리가 교회를 믿는다는 의미는 무엇인가? 우리는 과연 그 고백을 삼위 하나님을 믿는다는 말과 같은 맥락에서 이해해도 되는가? “거룩한 공회”라는 말이 함축하고 있는 바는 무엇인가? 특별히 칼빈의 「기독교 강요」를 중심으로 이를 고찰해봄으로써 종교다원화의 거대한 흐름 속에서 갈수록 함몰되어가는 개혁주의적 교회관을 더욱 공고히 하려고 한다. 본고에서 저자가 주목하고자 하는 것은 우리가 예배 때마다 「사도신경」을 따라서 “거룩한 공회”를 믿는다고 고백할 때 그것은 존재론인 고백이 아니라 교회의 속성에 대한 고백이라는 사실이다. 본고를 통해서 저자는 우리가 「사도신경」을 통해서 우리의 신앙을 고백할 때 마다 교회가 세상의 공동체와 구별되는 “거룩한 교회”요, 동시에 세상 속에 있는 공교회적인 개념을 가진 “보편적인 교회”라고 하는 교회의 본질적인 속성을 재확인함으로써 우리의 신앙고백을 올바르게 고백해야 한다는 사실을 드러내고자 한다. 특별히 교회는 보편적이기 때문에 세상 속으로 들어가서 교회의 머리가 되신 예수 그리스도를 드러내야 하고, 동시에 교회는 거룩하기 때문에 세상 속에서도 구별된 모습을 잃지 않아야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This article was originally presented at a commemoratory seminar for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation last year. In this paper, I sought the true meaning and the historical significance of the confession, “I believe the holy catholic church” in the Apostles’ Creed. One of my major concerns of this paper is the meaning of “we believe the holy catholic church.” Our question is this: Can we understand this confession of faith regarding the church as the same as in the confession that we believe in God the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit? What does the phrase in the confession “the holy catholic church” imply? We especially try to draw essential meanings of the confession as we look at John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion. One of important points I argue is that the confession “we believe the holy church” should not be understood ontologically about the Church herself, rather it must be understood as a confession about the attributes of the Church.
