이 글은 종교개혁자 칼빈이 조국 교회의 핍박받는 믿음의 동지들에게 보낸 눈물어린 애정과 격려가 담겨 있는 갈리칸 신조 초안에 대한 고찰이다. 이 신앙고백은 무엇보다도 칼빈의 말년의 신학 사상의 정수를 담고 있으며, 또한 성도들이 어디에서 신앙의 기반을 찾아야 할 것인가에 대한 대답을 단적으로 제시하고 있다. 필자는 이 신조의 초안이 내용적으로 “하나님의 말씀”을 근간으로 삼는 원칙과 그리스도론적 강조 위에 내적으로는 구원에 대한 확신, 그리고 외적으로는 분명한 교회론적 원칙을 천명해 나가고 있다고 파악한다. 그와 동시에 이 신조는 변하지 않는 하나님의 주권과 섭리에 대한 신앙을 담고 있으며, 예정론에 있어서 그리스도 중심적인 신학적 입장을 견지하고 있다. 또한 이 신앙고백은 교회의 기초가 그리스도임을 강조하면서, 올바른 직분자의 선택과 정당한 성례전의 실행을 권고하며, 교회와 국가의 관계 역시 하나님의 주권에 따라 규정되어야 함을 천명하고 있다. 이 신앙고백은 끊임없는 세상의 도전 속에서 흔들리지 않는 신앙의 중심 역할을 감당하며 프랑스의 경계선을 넘어 개혁정신을 곳곳에서 확산시키는데 큰 영향을 발휘했다. 이는 이 신앙고백이 담고 있는 굳건한 신학적 원칙이 고난과 위기 때마다 개혁교회가 나아가야 할 길을 밝혀주었기 때문일 것이다. 말씀에 굳건한 기반을 내리고 삼위일체 하나님에 대한 신앙고백을 하며, 섭리와 예정에 대한 굳은 확신, 그리스도 안에서의 분명한 믿음과 교회에 대한 굳건한 신앙을 역설했던 칼빈의 신학정신은 고난받는 개혁교회에 분명한 신학적 시금석을 제공했다.
Abstract
This study deals with the analysis of the draft of Confessio Gallicana which is sent by Calvin who wanted to encourage the pesecuted protestant church in his fatherland, France. The meaning of this draft lies in that it contains the quintessence of Calvin's theological thoughts in his later days. Calvin's Draft shows how the christian could find their foundation for faith, especially under the situation of persecution and suffering. In this draft, Calvin clarifies the obvious principle of ecclesiology, based on the principle of "Word of God", focusing on the christo-centrism. Simultaneously, it contains the confession on the unchangeable sovereignty of God and his providence, showing a christo-centric stance in the doctrine of the predestination. It teaches us that the Christ is the only foundation of the church, and urges christians to select the ecclesiastical offices appropriately and practise the sacred ceremonies righteously. It also clarifies that the sovereignty of God is a key role in the understanding of the relation between churches and secular states. With this contents, the Confessio Gallicana plays a central role for the spreading the spirit of Reformation over the world, beyond the borders of France, with its firm stance against the challenge from the persecution. Based on the faith of doctrine of providence and predestination, Calvin's Spirit provides the church of Reformed Traditon with the clear theological touchstone and standards.
