생명공학 시대의 유전자 조작 기술과 인간중심주의 비판

기독교 윤리에서 자연이라는 말은 ‘있는 그대로’의 원형 상태를 유지하는 것을 말한다. 성서에서는 “자연은 하나님께서 천지를 창조한 이후, 어떤 인위적인 조작이나 훼손 없이 ‘있는 그대로’의 보존 상태”라고 가르친다. 하지만 근대 이후, 과학 기술의 발달로 자연은 인간의 이기심에 짓밟히고 심지어 자연 상태를 인위적으로 조작하는 사태가 벌어지고 있다. 자연에 대한 인간의 지배는 인간의 지나친 욕심에서 비롯되어 결국 인간 스스로가 자연생태의 주인이 되고 싶어 하는 속내를 드러내고 말았다. 인간의 ‘프로메테우스적 욕망’은 결국 생명공학 기술과 하나 되어 새로운 국면에 접어들게 되었다. 생명공학 기술은 자연을‘원래’의 상태에서 인간 중심적인 형태로 조작하는 것은 물론 인간 생명까지도 목적 그 자체가 아니라 수단으로 삼고 있다. 특히 가장 염려스러운 것은 유전자 조작 기술과 인간을 대상으로 하는 복제 실험이다. 현재 생명공학 기술은 GMO 식품, 유전자 조작, 맞춤아기, 배아편집 기술 심지어 인간복제 기술까지 시도하고 있다. 이는 유전자 조작 기술을 통해 자연본성 길들이기 및 종의 다양성까지 파괴하는 문제와도 연결된다. 이러한 실험들은 성서뿐만 아니라 기존의 전통윤리학에서는 찾아볼 수 없었던 새롭게 등장한 윤리적 문제들이다. 이 글은 기존의 ‘자연적인 것’에서 발견되는 가치들을 성서의 가르침에서 찾아내고, 미래 생명공학 기술이 가진 ‘인간중심주의’에 대한 비판과 유전자 조작에 따른 윤리적 문제를 살펴보게 될 것이다. 끝으로 성서 속에 나타난 창조질서 및 자연중심성의 회복과 생명공학 시대에 요청되는 생태신학의 필요성을 요청할 것이다.
Abstract
For Christian Ethics, the word ‘Nature’ means to keep the original state as it was. The Bible says the Nature is a raw state of all things without any touch or artificial manipulation by human. Since modern age, largely attributed to the technology, however, the nature has been severely distorted and manipulated. Human domination over nature causes their excessive desires even to control all over the ecosystem. Such ‘Promethean desire’ of humankind finally led to a new stage to play with the biotechnology. Biotechnology is not only to manipulate the nature with human-centered way but also to use human life as a tool not a purpose. The most anxious approach than others is a gene manipulation, and human cloning experiment. Biotechnology today is even making genetically mortified organism(GMO) food, designer baby, embryo gene editing possible. Such technologies have closely connected with the destroying various species of ecosystem today. These experiments are quite new issues, never found in the Bible nor in traditional ethics. The purpose of this study is to find a natural value out of the Biblical teaching, and to apply it into the future biotechnology and related issues. A demand of eco-theology was remained for further studies with special reference to the Biblical creation order and eco-friendly biotechnology.
