기술권력으로서의 GMO에 대한 기독교 윤리적 고찰

GMO 과학기술과 관련된 산업과 권력은 기독교 윤리적 차원에서 볼 때, 자본의 맹목적 이윤 추구, 과학기술의 교만, 그리고 권력의 지배욕망을 여과없이 드러낸다. 그러나 GMO 기술 그 자체가 악으로 규정되어서는 안 된다. 현실적으로도 세계농업경제에 지속적으로 영향을 끼쳐온 GMO 기술을 폐기하는 일은 불가능해 보이고, 인간의 기술은 인구증가와 지구온난화에 대처하는데 도움을 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 기독교 신학의 차원에서 GMO 과학기술 자체보다는, 그 과학기술이 담고 있는 막강한 능력 때문에 주변에서쟁탈전을 벌이고 있는 자본과 권력의 문제에 더 집중을 해야 한다. 인간의발달된 과학기술인 GMO가 활용될 수 있도록 기독교 신학은 자본가, 기술자, 권력자들을 깨우는 역할을 담당해야 한다. 농민들만의 투쟁이 되어서는안 되며, 모두가 함께 참여하는 연대의 활동이 되어야 한다. 이 논문은 기독교인들이 생태친화적 농업과 유기농업이 GM 작물 때문에 피해를 입지 않도록 공존을 통한 생물의 다양성 확보를 위한 노력, 유전공학이 깊이 연루된거대권력에 대한 비판과 견제, 새로운 기술의 위험관리에 대한 민주적 운영등을 위해서 참여적인 자세로 임할 것을 주장한다. 이러한 차원의 확보를통해서 GMO가 약자를 위한 과학 기술이 되도록 기독교인들은 끊임없이비판하고 소통하며 견제의 역할을 담당할 때, 창조된 세계 속에서 인간의지성은 창조적 기여를 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Genetic Modification Technology and its related businesses raise issues of a distorted power structure, exposing GM Transnational Cooperations’ (TNCs) blind propensity to seek profits, arrogant attitudes of genetic engineers towards the public, and domination tendency of politicians. Though GM technology is inseparable from aforementioned issues, Christians should avoid identifying GM technology with evil. GM technology can be a useful tool for addressing human predicament caused by population explosion and global warming. In reality, GM technology is so widely spread that it is unthinkable for us to govern world agriculture without GMOs. Rather than focusing on GM technology itself, Christianity should pay more attention to power and money around the technology. Christianity should take a role of awakening capitalists, scientists, and politicians to use GM technology in such a way as to address inequality which a current GMO cartel of scientists, politicians, and capitalists creates. It is not the struggle of farmers, but the struggle of all who are concerned about it. Christians need to work toward biodiversity that ensures coexistence of GM crops and organic crops, democratic process in which all citizens participate in making decisions on GM risk management and rigid containment policy to GM TNCs that control world agricultural productions and distributions. Criticizing the current GM cartel and working with civil society, Christianity can make GM technology be useful to the poor and the technologically uninformed and human intelligence can make an inventive contribution to the world God has been creating.
