본고는 우연과 필연에 대한 마틴 루터와 존 칼빈의 견해를 밝히고 비교한다. 필연에 대한 루터와 칼빈의 가르침에 대한 평가는, 상대적 필연과 절대적 필연에 대한 스콜라적인 구별과 관련하여, 학계에서 논란이 적지 않다. 본고의 주된 목적은 그들이 실제로 사용한 언어와 가르침을 있는 그대로 제시함으로써 그들의 가르침을 정당하게 다루는 것이다. 우연과 필연에 대한 그들의 이해를 비교해보면 차이점과 일치점 둘 다가 드러난다. 그들의 용어, 화법, 그리고 가르침의 방식에 있어서는 상당한 차이가 있는 반면, 필연에 대한 가르침의 내용은 일치한다. 루터와 칼빈 둘 다 모든 것이 하나님의 뜻으로 말미암아, 뜻대로 발생한다고 데 동의한다.
Abstract
This essay is a comparative study of the understanding of contingency and necessity in the theologies of Martin Luther and John Calvin. Within contemporary scholarships there have been considerably debates over their doctrine of necessity in connection with the scholastic distinction between the necessity of consequence (namely, relative necessity) and the necessity of the consequent (namely, absolute necessity). My primary purpose is to do a verification of their own language and doctrine by presenting their teaching as they really were. Comparing their views of contingency and necessity, both divergences and points of contact are found. Whereas their terminology, ways of speaking, and method could differ significantly, their doctrine on necessity coincided in content. They fully agreed that nothing happens but by the will of God.
