칼빈의 개혁 신앙과 교회와 국가의 관계: 네덜란드의 코른헤르트(Dirck Coornhert: 1522-1590)와의 논쟁을 중심으로

칼빈은 네덜란드의 인문주의자요 니고데모주의자(Nicodemite)였던 코른헤르트(Dirck Coornhert: 1522-1590)와 1560-1562년에 걸쳐 로마 가톨릭의 의식(Ceremony)에 대한 논쟁을 벌였다. 당시 네덜란드에서 영향력 있는 정치가요 신학자였던 코른헤르트는 1560년에 네덜란드어로 로마 가톨릭 우상숭배에 대한 변증(Verschooninghe van de Roomsche afgodereye)을 저술하여 칼빈을 비판했다. 이 책은 네덜란드의 칼빈주의자들에 의해서 번역되어 칼빈에게 전달되었다. 칼빈은 코른헤르트의 변증에 대해서 어느 네덜란드인에 대한 답변 (Response to a certain Dutchman)을 저술하여 1562년에 출판하였으며 코른헤르트에게 전해졌다. 칼빈은 1537년 두 서신(Epistolae duae)부터 1562년 어느 네덜란드인에 대한 답변 (Response to a certain Dutchman)까지 25년을 한결같이 니고데모주의를 비판해 왔다. 칼빈의 이 소논문 니고데모주의자들에 대한 역사적이고 신학적인 정황을 이해하는데 큰 도움을 준다. 코른헤르트는 기독교 신앙은 성령에 의한 신자들과 하나님 간의 내적이고 영적인 관계이기 때문에 로마 가톨릭의 의식에 외적으로 참석하는 것은 개인의 신앙에 저촉되지 않는다고 주장했다. 그는 기독교인의 핵심적인 삶의 가치는 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 것이라면서 종교적인 의식이나 예전은 인간적인 기구들일 뿐이며 성경적이지 않다는 것이다. 코른헤르트는 당시 스페인의 지배로부터 네덜란드의 독립을 진행하는 오렌지공 윌리암의 자문 역할을 담당했던 무게 있는 지도자였다. 또 종교적인 관용을 강력하게 주장하고 있던 인문주의자로서 네덜란드에서 그의 영향력은 막강했다. 따라서 코른헤르트의 주장은 네덜란드 칼빈주의자들을 신학적으로 혼란하게 할 수 있었고 그들의 영향력을 현저하게 약화시킬 수 있었던 중대 사안이었다. 코른헤르트의 이런 주장은 지금까지 칼빈과 개혁파 신학자들이 종교개혁의 신학을 가졌다면 로마 가톨릭의 예전에 참석해서는 안되며 그로 인해서 야기될 수 있는 박해도 감수해야 하고 망명을 해서라도 신앙의 자유를 지키라고 했던 강조점을 정면으로 도전하는 것이었다. 그러므로 코른헤르트의 공격에 대한 칼빈의 신학적 답변은 네덜란드 칼빈주의자들은 말할 것도 없고 유럽 전체의 칼빈주의가 직면한 도전에 대해서 교회의 진로를 모색할 수 있는 절대적으로 중대한 신학적 진술이었다. 칼빈은 코른헤르트에 대해서 영혼과 육체, 신앙과 삶은 분리될 수 없으며 따라서 로마 가톨릭의 의식에 참석해서는 안된다고 강조했다. 칼빈은 개혁주의 신학과 삶의 통전성이라는 핵심적인 가치를 명확하게 제시하고 있다. 칼빈의 답변(Response)은 칼빈 자신이 네덜란드 칼빈주의 신학의 발전과 네덜란드의 독립에 얼마나 연관되어 있는지를 보여주는 중요한 사료가 된다. 칼빈이 강력하게 주장하고 있는 영적이고도 육적인 삶의 예배, 그리고 개혁주의 신학과 삶의 일치라는 핵심적인 가치는 스페인과 가톨릭 교회로부터 가혹하게 박해를 받고 있던 네덜란드 칼빈주의자들에게 영감을 주었다. 실제로 네덜란드가 1560년대 이후 저항과 독립으로 나갈 수 있는 신학적이고 실질적인 동력을 제공해 주었으며, 조국을 떠나서라도 종교개혁 신앙에 따라 살수 있도록 강력한 신학적 동기를 부여했다. 네덜란드 칼빈주의자들은 결과적으로 유럽의 칼빈주의 강화와 국제화에 공헌자가 될 수 있었다.
Abstract
Calvin argued against Dutch humanist and Nicodemite, Dirck Coornhert(1522-1590) in the course of 1560-1562 regarding the Roman Catholic Ceremony. At that time, Coornhert was a politician and theologian influential in the Netherlands. He criticized Calvin in his work Verschooninghe van de Roomsche afgodereye which was published in Dutch, in 1560. The book was translated by Dutch Calvinist and delivered to Calvin. Calvin also published his Response to a certain Dutchman in 1562 and sent it Coornhert. For 25 years, Calvin had consistently criticized Nicodemianism through his 1537 work Epistolae duae and Response to a certain Dutchman (1562). Coornhert argued that partaking in the outwardly, Catholic ceremony by believers is not conflicting to the inward spiritual relationship one has with God through the Holy Spirit. He insisted that Christianity’s core essence of loving God and loving one’s neighbor is only a religious rite and ceremony therefore unbiblical. During this time, Coornhert was a counselor to William of Orange who campaigned for Dutch independence from Spain. Also, as a humanist strongly supportive of religious tolerance, his prominence in the Netherlands was strong. Thus, Coornhert’s stance would not only bring theological confusion to the Dutch Calvinist but drastically weaken their influence. Coornhert’s contention was a direct challenge to Calvin, the Reformed theologians, and saints from the Reformation, who, up to this point, rejected the Catholic ceremony, endured persecution, and readily fled. Therefore, Calvin’s theological response to Coornhert’s attack was not a crucial theological writing devising a direction for the church of the Netherlands but for Europe as well. Calvin emphasized that man’s soul, body, and faith are inseparable so participating in the ceremony of the Roman Catholic unacceptable. The totality of the Reformed theology and faith is clearly presented. At the same time, Calvin’s Response is a prime historical record showing the relevance of Dutch Calvinistic theology to the progress of Dutch independence. Calvin’s view of spiritual and physical act of worship and Reformed theology, corresponding life and faith inspired the suffering Dutch Calvinist who were persecuted by the Spanish Catholic church. In effect, after 1560, it provided a theological motivation to continue the resistance and to live according to the faith of the Reformation. Consequently, Dutch Calvinist contributed to the strengthening and internationalization of Calvinism in Europe.
