Abstract
In the center of the Reformational thoughts, the theology of the grace was internationally authorized in the Synod of Dort(1618-19). In the backgrounds of that process we see the historical development of the Netherlands from Spain. The Synod of Dort(1618-19) has thus the meaning in the perspective of the issue of Church and State, as well as that of the Reformed theology. The Netherlands was a region of the flexibly united provinces under the rule of the Habsburgs. Since the iconoclasical movement(1566) and the outbreak of the independent war(1568), the faith of the Calvinism and the will of the national independence were closely engaged. Basically the Arminians and the Gomarists stood on the idea of the Union of Utrecht(1579), which proclaimed the protection of the human rights not to be examined by the state for the religious differences and to have a religious freedom. The principle of the Union of Utrecht showed a special implication in terms of the tolerance of thoughts, when we consider the circumstances of the persecution of the Protestants in those days. The Union of Utrecht became the parent tree of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden). In the base of the Union of Utrecht we finds the idea of the Pacification of Gent(1576) which was formed just after the Spanish Fury(Spaanse Furie, 1576). The theological differences between the Arminians and the Gomarists were also revealed in their distinct viewpoints to Church and State. The Remonstrants illustrated the Erastian thought, so that they tried to bring their ecclesiastical issues under the control of the state of the province. The Remonstrants, economically, aimed to revitalize the trades with the Spain, and they accepted the supremacy of the state of the province to the theological matters. In this sense they followed the political line with Oldenbarnevelt(1547-1619), who was a state man of the province of Holland and supported the religious tolerance. On the other hand, the Gomarists strongly believed that both state and Church should be controlled by the Word of God. They followed the orthodox Calvinism which emphasizes the freedom and independence of the Church from the State in the ecclesiastical and theological issues. The Gomarists held strong position against Spain and they put the emphasis on the unity of the doctrine. Thus, they wanted to have a centralized power rather than the decentralized one. In the same context, the Gomarists tried to solve the theological issue which was presented by the Remonstrants in the national synod.
