Abstract

When a concept is expressed in language, its meaning expands to mirror the hopes and expectations of the era. This phenomenon is evident in various texts, including the Bible, where the term "son of David" or similar expressions takes on diverse connotations depending on the context and beliefs expected. In the Old Testament, God's promise that the reign of the son of David would be "everlasting" (2 Sam. 7:12) encapsulates God’s assurance and the people's hope that the dynasty would persist through David's direct successors. They were anticipated to possess superior political skills and wisdom compared to David and Solomon. This expectation often surfaces during times of heathen oppression and the rule of corrupt kings. In Solomon's Psalm 17, he is depicted as a forceful ruler who reproves and overcomes Gentile rulers with divine power conveyed through God's words. Despite this martial role, he is a king of peace to Israel. In Qumran documents, he assumes a military and political mantle, leading a triumphant charge in the impending apocalyptic war between the children of light and darkness, unrelated to David’s bloodline. The use of the term, "Son of David" as a messianic title in Matthew’s Gospel marks a significant departure from the understanding of a political and military leader. According to Matthean Jesus, identified as "the Son of David," transcends the role of a mere earthly leader. He is the superior "the Lord of David" and the Son of God, adopted by Joseph, who himself is a son of David. While not directly related to David by bloodline, Jesus follows David's lineage, surpassing both David and Solomon in stature. He is conceived as the king of the eternal Kingdom of Heaven, inaugurating the heavenly Kingdom on earth. Therefore, Jesus did not come to reinstate an "earthly Davidic kingdom" but to announce the eternal Kingdom of Heaven. In Matthew's Gospel, the Son of David emerges as a "Davidic Messiah," serving as a symbolic representation more adapts for interpreting "Jesus" than "David" himself. Consequently, our understanding of the Son of David and related "kings" in the Old Testament does not fully unveil Matthew's concerns or intentions. In essence, Matthew offers a novel perspective on the Son of David, transcending their contemporary perceptions, as he seeks to convey the aspirations and expectations related to Jesus.
