Abstract
The sixteenth-century protestant churches produced many confessions to manifest their theological positions and directions facing their distinct situations. “The First Helvetic Confession”(1536) was written in Basel by a group of Switzerland reformers to respond to the plan of the Roman Council in Mantua. This confession played an important role as a theological standards of the German-speaking Switzerland churches, and affected many other reformed confessions in structure and contents. This study, in the first place, reviews the historical background, references, and structures to illuminate the value and features of this confession. Next, the fifteenth and subsequent chapters of this confession are analysed to clarify the reformation characteristics of the early german-speaking reformed churches in the three key ecclesiological themes: Definition, marks, and government of the Church. This analysis shows that the reformation principle “solus Christ caput” consistently dominates the statements about the church in the First Helvetic Confession. This confession defines the church on the biblical basis of Christ’s sole headship, suggests the marks of the true church from the ultimate standards of sovereign rule of Christ’s word, and grounds the ecclesiastical offices upon the Christ’s legitimate institution. The First Helvetic Confession holds the historical significance in applying the reformation principle of “solus Christus” for the ecclesiastical themes and establishing the clear and consistent ecclesiological emphasis, which has continued in the following reformed confessions, in the early stage of the reformed tradition.
