Abstract
Brian Abasciano, in his recent publications on Romans 9, denies the primacy of individual election (or predestination) in Romans 9. Rather, he maintains that the nature of election in Romans 9 is predominately corporate. In support of his view, he deals with three issues: (1) The OT texts that Paul cites in Romans 9:1-18 generally support the corporate election. (2) The socio-cultural milieu of ancient Israel and the OT concept of “corporate solidarity/representation” further strengthen the concept of corporate election in Romans 9. (3) The Hellenistic culture and Judaism of Paul’s day that were dominantly “collectivist rather than individuals” might have shaped Paul’s understanding of election as corporate. This paper, however, finds Abasciano’s interpretation of Romans 9 problematic for the following reasons. (1) His view of corporate election in Genesis 18:10, 14; 21:21 (quoted in Rom 9:7-9) and Genesis 25:3 and Malachi 1:2-3 (cited in Rom 9:10-13) might not be exegetically correct. (2) His claim on the socio-cultural milieu of the OT period and the concept of corporate solidarity/representation is misleading. As a result, many of his reading of Romans 9:6-13 stand on a questionable ground. Contrary to Abasciano argument, therefore, this paper argues that Romans 9 clearly teaches individual election unto salvation.
