Abstract
Salvation of All Israel in Romans 11:25-27 Hyun-Gwang Kim (Korean Bible University) This article explores the meaning of ‘all Israel’ in Romans 11:26. Concerning the meaning of ‘all Israel,’ there are three major views: All Israel as (1) the church composed of both Gentiles and Jews, (2) the mass of Jewish nation to be saved in the future, and (3) the elect of ethnic Israel throughout history. This article argues against the view that there will be a future mass conversion of the nation of Israel by scrutinizing the meanings of ‘mystery,’ porosis, apo merous, achri ou-, pleroma ton ethnon, jealousy of Israel, kai houtos and pas Israel. The theses of this article are as follows: (1) Israel’s partial hardening continues until the end of time and Romans 11:25 does not imply that the hardening of some Jews will be lifted after the full number of Gentiles are saved. (2) Because of Israel’s partial hardening, salvation comes to the Gentiles and the full number of Gentiles will be saved. (3) Although 11:25 does not explicitly state this, 11:11-15 informs that the Gentile ingathering in history arouses Israel’s jealousy resulting in the salvation of some Jews. This event continues throughout history. (4) Therefore, the manner in which all Israel will be saved is (a) hardened Israel’s rejection of the gospel→ (b) ingathering of Gentiles→ (c) jealousy of Israel and the salvation of some Jews. In this redemptive plan ‘all Israel’ refers to the total number of the elect from ethnic Israel throughout history. By the salvation of ‘all Israel,’ Paul proves that God did not reject his people. Gentiles should not be arrogant against Israel since God did not reject his people, and since the Gentiles are grafted in the olive tree by the grace of God.
