톰 라이트의 바울해석에 대한 새 비판 - 이스라엘의 운명에 관한 톰 라이트의로마서 9-11 해석이 지니는 4가지 문제점

톰라이트에 대한 지금까지의 비판은 바울에 대한 “새관점”과 이신칭의 교리에 관련된 그의 비 전통적 주장들에 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 하지만 라이트의 바울해석 중 아주 독특하지만 아직 비판적인 조명을 받지 못한 부분은 바로 이스라엘의 운명에 대한 라이트의 로마서 9-11장 해석이다. 본 논문은 라이트의 로마서 9-11장 해석을 소개하고 이 해석에 대한 4가지 문제점을 지적한다. 라이트의 로마서 9-11장 해석의 중요한 줄기는 이스라엘의 운명이 죽음과 부활을 겪으신 메시야의 운명과 비슷한 모양과 역할을 하도록 디자인 되었다는 것이다. 즉, 메시야가 버림받으신 사건 (십가가에서 죽으심)이 구원을 성취하신 것 같이, 이스라엘의 버림받음도 메시야의 구원성취에 중요한 기여를 하며, 메시야가 구원을 이루시고 부활하신 것 같이, 이스라엘도 구원적인 기여를 마치면 부활과 같은 회복을 경험한다는 것이다. 라이트에 의하면 하나님은 율법과 “걍팍케 하심"을 도구삼아 이스라엘의 운명을 이렇게 ”메시야 적”으로 재단하신다. 라이트의 이러한 해석에는 다음의 4가지 문제가 있다. 첫째, 라이트는 이스라엘의 실패와 버림받음이 메시야의 구원성취에 기여를 하는 방법은 바로 이스라엘의 율법어김을 통해 세상의 죄가 이스라엘 안에 모아져서 메시야가 죄를 단번에 해결할 수 있도록 준비를 해 놓는 데에 있다고 주장한다. 하지만 라이트의 이 주장은 이스라엘이 세상을 대표하는 기능을 지녀야만 가능한데 이스라엘이 이러한 기능을 가졌다는 근거는 어디에서도 찾을 수 없다. 둘째, 라이트는 이스라엘이 율법어김을 통해 세상의 죄를 모으는 역할을 수행하는 것과 하나님이 이스라엘을 “걍팍케” 하시는 것을 동일한 현상으로 해석하는데 이는 “걍팍케 하심“에 대한 로마서 9장의 묘사에 어긋난다. 셋째, 라이트에 의하면 하나님이 이스라엘의 운명을 메시아적 버림받음과 메시아적 회복의 패턴으로 이끄는 방법은 ”걍팍케 하심”을 통해서 인데, 라이트는 이 “걍팍케 하심”을 그저 이스라엘의 이미 걍팍한 마음에 대한 하나님의 수동적 참으심으로 정의한다. 하지만 이러한 수동적 정의는 하나님의 “걍팍케하심”을 좀더 역동적으로 표현하는 로마서 9-11장의 묘사와 맞지 않는다. 마지막으로, 라이트는 이스라엘의 메시아적인 회복의 과정을 설명하는 데에 있어서 하나님의 “걍팍케 하심”을 최후의 심판에 이르기까지 지속되는 되돌릴 수 없는 현상으로 이해하는데 이 또한, “걍팍케 하심”에 대한 부정적인 정의와 더불어, 로마서 9-11이 그리는 그림에 부합하지 않는 묘사이다.
Abstract
Wright has constructed an innovative thesis from Romans 9–11 that Israel has a "messianic" destiny, which is shaped by God's Torah-based hardening of Israel throughout the history of Israel. While this thesis constitutes a brilliantly creative way of connecting the dots in the text, the present article has shown that there are at least four claims in this thesis that are difficult to justify exegetically from the text of Romans and other relevant texts. Without meeting the four exegetical challenges raised in this article, Wright's thesis of Israel's "messianic” destiny may represents a fresh way of misreading Romans 9–11.
