The issue of word order in Biblical Hebrew has been a topic of great interest to Hebrew grammarians since the early twentieth century. However, despite numerous studies on the verbal clause/sentence level, relatively less attention has been given to the word order of the verbless clause. Needless to say, verbless clauses with a participle predicate have received even less discussion. This paper aims to survey recent studies on the word order of the verbless clause, including that of the participle clause. The article will briefly review major arguments proposed on the verbless clause, ranging from Gesenius’ Hebrew Grammar (2nd ed.; 1909) to the recent works by F. I. Andersen (1970), J. Hoftijzer (1973), T. Muraoka (1985), E. J. Revell (1989, 1999), A. Niccacci (1993), R. Buth (1999), Christo H. J. van der Merwe & E. Talstra (2002-2003), and J. Joosten (1989, 2021).
