Abstract
The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of the brain education based elderly depression reduction program. For this reason, self-esteem and life satisfaction were selected as variables that are highly related to depression, and analyzed the effects on these variables and depression. The study was conducted in a nonequivalent control group pre-test/post-test design for 60 elderly people aged 65 and over who used the elderly welfare center and hall located in the G region. The program was conducted twice a week for 60 minutes each, for a total of 20 sessions. The collected data were performed Analysis of Covariance using SPSS 18.0. As a result, the experimental group showed significantly higher self-esteem and life satisfaction, and lower depression than the control group. The brain education-based depression reduction program, which combines brain exercise, laughter, and energy-intensive meditation with the brain, is expected to alleviate depression by controlling body and brain functions. Considering that self-esteem and life satisfaction are suggested as the main variable affecting depression, this suggests the possibility of applying the brain education based elderly depression reduction program as an intervention for elderly depression.
