Abstract
This study analyses empirically determinants of speed of dividend adjustment for firms listed on Korea Securities Market of Korea Exchange. Leary and Michaely's (2011) dividend adjustment model indicates that firms have long run target dividend per share, and that firms adjust partially the gap between actual and target dividend per share each year. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows. Determinants suggested by the major theories of dividends, namely, residual dividend theory, information asymmetry theory, and agency theory explain significantly the speed of adjustment(SOA) of dividend for Korean firms. According to the residual dividend theory, high profitable but low leveraged firms have higher SOA. According to the information asymmetry theory, younger and smaller firms, firms with less tangibility assets, and firms with high business risk and high turnover ratio have higher SOA. Moreover, according to the agency theory, firms with high growth opportunities, more mature cash cow firms, firms with low managerial holdings and low institutional holdings, and firms with low dividend payout ratio and low repurchase ratio have higher SOA. These results suggest evidence that Korean firms maintain stable dividend policy which maintain past DPS level without corporate special reason. The SOA changes over time. This result implies that the nature of financial market, the degree of information asymmetry, and the role of repurchases in payout policy should be changed over time. Moreover, the SOA changes according to the degree of financial constraints. Financially constrained firms with market unaccessibility and low credit rating score have lower SOA. However, the determinants of SOA for total payment(cash dividend + stock repurchase) is very similar to that for cash dividend. In conclusion, Korean firms have long run target dividend per share, and that firms adjust partially the gap between actual and target dividend per share each year. The SOA of dividend can be explained mainly by the major theories of dividends, including the residual dividend theory, information asymmetry theory, and agency theory. The changes of time series characteristics over time and financial constraints also explain partially the SOA of dividend in Korean firms.
