Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the impact of social exclusion on popular product preferences. Based on prior research related to embodied recognition, presenting a warm image would mitigate the impact of social exclusion on the preference of popular products. Also, the degree of negative emotions derived from social exclusion may vary depending on consumers, and this study focused on anger, which is caused by other people's wrongs or unfairness. And then, this research suggested that social exclusion would have a significant impact on the preferences of popular products for consumers who are angry about social exclusion. Specifically, it was suggested that there would be a three-way interaction effect of social exclusion, the anger felt by consumers, and warm image presentation. As a result of an experiment, consumers who experienced social exclusion preferred popular products to those who did not, and consumers preferred popular products under conditions where warm images were not presented. As expected, these effects have only been seen under consumers who have felt a high level of anger over their social exclusion experience. The results of this study expanded the scope of research related to social exclusion and embodied recognition.
