Abstract
The present study attempted to test the prediction that, in terms of intention to purchase recommended or popular products, people who experienced social exclusion would demonstrate increased conformity with the preferences of others or those of a group, than would people who did not. In study 1, individuals were grouped into those who have perceived social exclusion in daily life and those who have not, and their intention to purchase recommended and popular products was assessed. In study 2, subjects were grouped into those who have experienced social exclusion in a laboratory environment and those who have not, and their intention to purchase recommended and popular products was assessed. Findings revealed that individuals who had experienced social exclusion in daily life (Study 1) and those who experienced it in the laboratory setting (Study 2) demonstrated a stronger intention to purchase recommended or popular products as compared to those who had not experienced social exclusion. This phenomenon is associated with the motivation of individuals who experienced social exclusion because conforming to the preferences of others or those of a group is a means for them to form a new relationship.
