Abstract
We often experience social exclusion, such as being ignored or rejected by a group. This study examines how experiencing social exclusion of these two types is related to product satisfaction in the context of consumption and whether this relationship is affected by the number of alternatives. It finds that, where there are a large number of alternatives, consumers who experience being ignored have higher product satisfaction than those who experience rejection. However, where there are a small number of alternatives, individuals who experience socially explicit rejection have higher satisfaction than those who are ignored. This study confirms the impact of social exclusion on consumer product satisfaction and further reveals the relationship between number of alternatives and social exclusion. Marketers can use these results to identify what number of product alternatives is appropriate in light of consumer experience.
