Abstract
Previous studies on social exclusion present conflicting findings about whether the consumer who perceives social exclusion gets involved in negative behavior or positive behavior. In addition, there has been a little research conducted on the social exclusion experienced by rapidly aging population in Korea. This study explores the differential consumption pattern based on the mechanism which determines the relationship between social exclusion and negative consumption (conspicuous consumption) even when the social exclusion is only perceived. For this purpose, social exclusion was categorized into 2 types, ignored and rejected. Differentiated consumption pattern of those 2 groups; experiencing ignored and rejected were observed. The results suggest that, under the same condition, a group experiencing rejection tended to have more conspicuous consumption and blame themselves for social exclusion. While group feeling ignored tended to blame others as a reason they could not be included in the society. Rejection group believed they could not control social exclusion, while ignored group believed they could control it. Furthermore, these exclusion factors resulted in different emotions; a group with external attribution responded that they felt more anger and a group with internal attribution experienced more sadness. Different emotions lead to differentiated consumption. A group experienced more anger tended to have higher conspicuous consumption. Therefore, if socially unprivileged people are not included in target market when making advertisements, marketing strategy to reduce their anger and dissatisfaction is required.
