Abstract

Recognizing the importance of ethical leadership, researchers have tried to identify its antecedents. However, research on the antecedent of ethical leadership has mainly focused on the leader behavior, but paid only little attention to the follower perception. In this study, I theorized and examined both the main and interaction effects of LMX and LMX differentiation to address this research gap. Questionnaire data were collected from Korean Navy. The results indicated that LMX significantly increased member’s perception of ethical leadership, and LMX differentiation significantly reduced their perception of ethical leadership. I also found that LMX differentiation strengthened the positive relationship between LMX and member’s perception of ethical leadership. This study contributes to both ethical leadership and LMX literatures by considering LMX and LMX differentiation as interactional antecedents of ethical leadership. This is the first study examining these relationships. Implications for theory and practice, limitations, and directions for future study are discussed.
