Abstract

This study analyzed the level of investment in internal accounting personnel of family firms. In Korea, family businesses are either controlled by the founders and their family, or owned and managed by the controlling shareholders and their family. Due to the nature of the corporate governance structure, the interests of shareholders and managers are aligned in family firms, and the agency problem between the control￾ling shareholder and the minority shareholders is highlighted rather than the agency problem between the share￾holders and the manager. At the same time, family firms have the advantage of running the business from a long-term perspective based on a sense of ownership. On the other hand, although investment in internal accounting personnel entails related costs, it has the effect of mitigating information asymmetry between inside and outside the company and ultimately increasing the corporate value. As a result of examining firms listed on the KOSPI from 2011 to 2018, it was confirmed that family firms are actively investing in internal accounting personnel. Specifically, it was found that family firms enlarged the size of internal control organization and placed experienced personnel in the system. The results suggest that family businesses composed of founders and their families place importance on reputation and actively invest in the internal accounting management system as they run the business with a long-term outlook com￾pared to non-family businesses.
