Abstract

This study examines the influence of visual artworks and art publications on Lu Xun [魯迅]’s literary imagination prior to his composition of A Madman’s Diary. During his time in Japan, Lu Xun encountered WATTS by Loftus Hare, featuring Frederick Watts’s Hope, which, along with Hare’s commentary, informed his metaphors such as “the last remaining string” and “a solitary star,” and shaped his notion of literature as the “voice of the heart [心聲]” that conveys despair. He also coined the term “inner radiance [內曜]” to express a vital inner force. Anti-war paintings by Vasily Vereshchagin influenced his translation of Garschin’s Four Days and may have guided his later engagement with anti-war texts, including The Harvest Moon by Luther Bradley and A Young Man’s Dream by Mushanokoji Saneatsu. While working at the Ministry of Education (1912–1913), Lu Xun collected German art books and developed a strong interest in Impressionism and Expressionism. Through Wilhelm Michel’s The Diabolical and the Grotesque in Art, he encountered works centered on fear, madness, and death—most notably Van Gogh’s The Prison Courtyard and Munch’s The Scream and The Death Chamber. Van Gogh’s The Sower, symbolizing spiritual longing and inner strength, was used as the cover image for Lu Xun’s translation On the Trend of Modern Art History. Munch’s The Death Chamber II notably visualized “hope” through the figure of a young man attempting escape, and it likely inspired Lu Xun’s “iron house” metaphor in the Preface to Scream. Similarly, Munch’s The Scream shaped his depiction of the madman’s existential terror in A Madman’s Diary. Ultimately, visual art served as a significant source of creative inspiration in Lu Xun’s early literary formation.
