사도신경은 서방교회의 대표적 신앙고백문이다. 사도신경은 초대교회기간 중 신자들의 세례예비교육 자료로 등장했다. 그런 점에서다른 신조들과 달리 사도신경은 대중이 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 언어와내용으로 구성되어 있다. 삼위일체적 관점에서 성경의 전체 내용을 정리하면서 사도신경은보통의 사람들에게 성경의 중심사상을 쉽게 전달해 준다. 이 논문은 칼빈이 사도신경을 그의 신학과 사역에서 어떻게 다루고사용하였는지를 연구해서 보여주고자 한다. 서방교회의 주요한 신학자들을 따라서 칼빈도 사도신경의 권위를 충분히 인정하면서 그의 신학 활동에서 주요 자료로 사용했다. 사도신경은 칼빈의 신학과 목회적 사역의 중심을 차지했다. 그의 대표작인 기독교강요의 경우 1536년의 초판부터 1559년의 최종판에이르기까지 사도신경의 구조와 내용에 따라 구성된 사실을 확인할수 있다. 그의 제네바에서의 종교개혁활동의 공식적 출발을 알리는첫 작품인 제네바 신조와 1541/2에 출판한 제네바요리문답은 모두사도신경을 기초로 구성된 자료이다. 칼빈이 공에배에서 시편 외에모두 거부한 교회음악의 경우에도 주기도문과 십계명 그리고 사도신경을 노래하는 것은 중요하게 취급되었다. 혹자는 사도신경이 우리의 신학과 목회의 중심적 사항이라는 사실에 의문을 제기할 수도 있다. 그렇다면 우리는 칼빈으로부터 사도신경의 사용에 대해서 배워야 하겠다. 칼빈은 기독교신앙의 강화를 위해 요리문답을 중요하게 다루었다. 그래서 어린이들을 대상으로는소요리문답교육을 무척 강조했는데, 이는 종교개혁을 성공으로 이끌어 가는 중추적 역할에 해당되는 사역이었다. 오늘날의 교회에 칼빈의 정신을 적용한다면, 우리는 오늘날 교리교육과 신앙교육의 필요성에 대해서 심각하게 고려해야만 한다. 이 논문은 종교개혁 당시 칼빈의 주요관심이 어떠했는지를 보여주며 우리로 하여금 이로부터 무엇을 배워야 하는지를 주의 깊게 가르쳐 주고 있다.
Abstract
As the most representative article of faith of the Western Church, The Apostle’s Creed appeared as a didactic material for the baptism of the believers during the early church period. As such, it was constructed in a language and content that was easily understandable to the public in contrast to other contemporary creed. Through a comprehensive summary of the whole biblical content from a trinitarian perspective, the The Apostle’s Creed introduces the central teachings of the Bible to the common people in a plain manner. The present paper intends to research on how The Apostle’s Creed was used in work and ministry of Calvin. Following the precedent main theologians of the Western Church, Calvin recognized fully the authority of The Apostle’s Creed and used it as a main source for his theological pursuit. The Apostle’s Creed was at the center of his theological and pastoral ministry. His master piece, The Institutes of the Christian Religion which was first published in 1536 and last edited in 1559, is structured around the framework and contents of The Apostle’s Creed. The Geneva Creed, which he made public in the beginning of his reformation movement in Geneva, and the Geneva Catechism published in 1541/2 were both written on the basis of The Apostle’s Creed. Besides the psalms which Calvin has allowed as the hymnal for the worship, the only others were the Lord’s Prayer, The Decalogue and The Apostle’s Creed. So one may argue that The Apostle’s Creed was the center of his theology and liturgy. As such we learn the following lessons from the Calvin’s use of The Apostle’s Creed: Calvin saw the central role of the Catechism in the nurturing of the Christian faith. And considered it, especially the Short Catechism for the children, as the most important ministerial element for the success of the Reformation. Provided we apply this spirit of Calvin to the present Church, we may learn the need for the didactic Catechism and the importance of the faith education. The present paper shows that the main concern of Calvin at the time of religious reformation is an important lesson for us today with a careful attention.
