Abstract
This study analyzes whether it is plausible to discern specific periods with postcards displaying Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, a sightseeing place under Japanese rule, which was initially served as a garden during the reign of King Gojong. The capital city, Han Sung, in the Joseon dynasty, had intense historical narrative as it became to be Kyung Sung in the colonial period. In the late 19th century, many Westerns visited Han Sung with various purposes such as public affair, education, medicine, religion, and tour. They unveiled personal experiences about the overall aspects of the Joseon dynasty by writing a travel essay, which played a role in publicizing Joseon over the world. Difference was a definite keyword of the essays. However, the Empire Japan put more weight on recognition that Joseon was a colonialized territory. Japan mass-produced visual images such as photo album, postcard, and pamphlet to attract people with low literacy and Japanese in the promotion of immigration, colonialization, business and education inspection team and group tour ; the photo postcard was the most popular. Gyeongseong was a complicated place where the immigration and settlement of Japanese settlers in Joseon and people residing in Japan, the elite, and foreigners were mixed up. Especially, various national ceremonies, welcoming party for army and tour groups, and private events were held in the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. It was a cultural consumption place to convey experiences of joy, excitement, and euphoria as well as to demonstrate the cultural identity of Japanese people. Compared to Namdaemun and Dongdaemun exhibiting only the movement process, it gave a chance to experience the whole building ; therefore, photo postcards displaying the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion were mass-produced. Importantly, those images on the postcards revealed historical changes over 10-15 years. Firstly, in the early 1900s, it came with the image of natural environment around the Gyunghoeru Pavilion in foreginers’ eyes. Secondly, from 1900 to 1914, it presented the maintenance period of a pond. Thirdly, from 1915 to 1928, the full repair of the pond and the transportation of a pagoda stone in Buddhism were shown through the Joseon Industrial Exhibition of 1915 and the Joseon Sideline-products Exhibition of 1923. Fourthly, it represented the emergence of a wooden bridge and Gisaeng and ceremonial stamps from 1929 to 1945. Lastly, it was used as a landmark in expositions as it turned from a secret place to a public space. The most popular and sold photos were actively used in making of postcards and were also copied and imitated in newspapers, photo albums, and travel essays. All in all, the image of the Gyunghoeru Pavilion, which displayed the Gyeongseong era frequently, unveiled the characteristics of a changing era as it was utilized as a thoroughly fabricated landmark by the Empire Japan.
