Abstract

This paper analyzes how South Korea’s anti-communism centered in Seoul intertwined with the global Cold War anti-communist movements during Syngman Rhee and Park Chung-hee’s governments (1950s-1970s) and how Seoul became a hub for international anti-communist movements. This study first examines the relationship between South Korea and the Asian Peoples’ Anti-Communist League (APACL) and the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), both established with the significant role of the South Koreans. Next, it investigates how various anti-communist events that happened in Seoul contributed to making the city as a central node in the international anti-communist network. The construction of the Freedom Center in 1964 played a crucial role in this endeavor. Finally, this article explores how the Korean Anti-Communist League (KACL), located at the Freedom Center, fostered a staunch anti-communist national identity and linked it to the international anti-communist movements. Seoul hosted numerous international anti-communist events, including APACL and WACL conferences, to promote South Korea as a model of anti-communist states. The Freedom Center, constructed in 1964, became a symbolic space, serving as a hub for international anti-communist exchange and a physical embodiment of the regime's anti-communist ideology. The KACL consolidated domestic anti-communist organizations and strengthened the anti-communist identity of Korean citizens through various activities. These initiatives emphasized the link with the international anti-communist movements. The KACL’s activities, organization, and events aimed to build a purely anti-communist society in South Korea and to connect South Koreans to the international network as anti-communist citizens of the (Free) World. This study will illuminate the construction of South Korea’s identity as a staunch anti-communist state, situating Seoul at the heart of this process as a symbolic space within the broader context of Cold War culture.
