Abstract
This paper attempts to analyze the context in which ‘Asia’ was imagined in the Cold War period. The main object of this analysis is the ideological situation or the structure of political-cultural imagination in South Korea in the decade immediately following liberation, 1945~1955. This paper mainly deals with the situation of South Korea in comparison with that of Japan. Immediately after the liberation in 1945, South Korea’s intellectuals expressed passionate feelings of solidarity towards newly independent nations as well as nations struggling for liberation. But the birth of ‘red’ China was the dominant cause for new lines of division on South Korea’s map of Asia. In addition, ‘the Pacific fantasy’ got to be constructed. The Pacific was a geographical metaphor for a bright new age and an imaginary-geography of political solidarity, which could never be imagined without the continued existence of the U.S. Since the Korean War, the intellectuals in South Korea located the imaginary position of their country in the center of the Cold War map. It can be said that it was after the Korean War that Asia was initially imagined as a political unit began to be re-characterized in cultural terms. With the emergence of the political map of Asia in 1953, interest in the history and culture of ‘the East’ also intensified. The cultural historical re-writing and re-defining of this region evolved in the field of intellectual discourse. We can observe the dual motivation of the proponents of ‘the East’ discourse of the early 1950s. First, they intended to establish the origin of Asian inferiority on the level of culture. In addition, they planned to promote the anti-communist rebirth of Asia, clarifying the selective exclusion/inclusion of particular nations. In this way, the Cold War ideology grew stronger borrowing the cultural account of the imaginary geography of ‘Asia’ or ‘the East’.
